Work Experience

The Historic Houses Trust of NSW work experience program for Year 10 students is designed to provide students with an understanding of what it is like to work in a museum environment and as part of a team.

The HHT offers two types of work experience placements:

Working with the Front of House

Students assist with the daily tasks undertaken by Front of House staff. Among the duties students have the opportunity to participate in during their work experience with the Front of House staff are:

• Welcoming visitors to the properties
• Ticketing and cloaking
• Preparation and pack down of educational programs
• Assisting with security
• Participating on tours
• Observation of visitor behaviour
• Administration tasks
• Assisting with opening of the museum to the public
• Answering visitor’s questions and providing directions

Working with the Front of House staff offers students the opportunity to work for five days at several inner city properties or be based at one property on the edges on Sydney.

Assisting some of the HHT’s Units

Students will have the opportunity to experience working within some of the HHT units including: Education, Public Programs, Exhibition & Publication and Design. Students will have the chance to see how the many and varied elements of museum work come together to create the exhibitions and programs enjoyed by the public. Some of the tasks students will have the opportunity to undertake while working with the Units are:

• Attending meetings
• Preparation and pack down of programs
• Administration tasks
• Assisting with research
• Helping with equipment checks
• Observe interactions with school groups
• Overview of roles different of positions fulfil in museums, such as Education Officers.

Work experience with the Units involves five days divided between two units based at The Mint.

DUE TO CHANGES IN STAFFING AT THE HISTORIC HOUSES TRUST WE ARE UNABLE TO TAK WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENTS DURING 2012.

All applications for work experience are subject to the ability of the properties/units to accommodate students at the time requested. Applications must be submitted at least 2 months before the proposed date for a work experience position to allow time for a suitable placement to be arranged.
