The Message of Goodwill and Congratulation for the bridge opening was relayed to Sydney from the central west town of Tottenham
Di Collins from St IvesMy mother, Doris Howard, was chosen as one of two pupils to represent Tenterfield High School. She ended up being the only pupil from Tenterfield to do so as the boy chosen lost the honour after having been found smoking behind the weathershed. My mother was so proud of having been chosen that she just had to walk through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel on its opening day and my sister and her family continued the tradition in her honour on the occasion of the 75th celebrations. My mother, along with many country pupils, was billeted at the Far West Home in Manly and had her photograph in the daily papers. She was less impressed with the journalistic caption which said something along the lines of 'country children seeing the beach for the first time'. She also said the Tenterfield butcher displayed the photograph in his shop. We used to tease her and say she must have been a page 3 girl.
