Despite Macleay's financial predicaments, one can't help but admire his vision. The breathtaking elegance of the domed saloon and 'geometric' staircase makes this one of Sydney's finest houses. Then there's the magnificent harbour view. Enjoyed from the breezy front porch or the first floor bedrooms, the house's location with views to Clark Island and distant North and South Heads will make even those who aren't history buffs marvel at Macleay's embracing of the Sydney Harbour landscape. You might wish to time travel back to the house's heyday. With a little imagination, the aid of Conrad Martens' 1838 watercolour on display in the library and the surviving grotto you'll be halfway there.
