Fort Denison. Joel Winter © Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW

Fort Denison was intended to defend Sydney from a Russian threat in 1854 and constructed on the basis of a model of a fort used in Corsica to resist pirates in the 17th century. Fort Denison is the last known Martello Tower constructed anywhere in the world. It is a fascinating glimpse into the mentality of the civil and military defence architects and engineers in mid-19th century Sydney. Join historians Brad Manera and Dr Craig Wilcox as they explore Fort Denison, the dinosaur of Sydney Harbour. The tour will also visit Dawes Point Battery. These two historians, in conjunction with guides from National Parks and Wildlife, will reveal previously unpublished insights into the fort, its population and the city it was built to protect.
